Snow!

First big snow of the season! And what was Abigail's reaction? Check it out:
"What is this wet stuff? I think I need a nap." And indeed, Jonathan took her back upstairs for a nice nap while Daphne and Amanda headed to the park:

This is, surely, Daphne's season.

That's right

It seems that Abigail's stranger anxiety is tapering off! YAY!!!!!!!! She still does not care for swimming. You take the good with the bad.

Reaching, pulling, climbing!

Our girl is getting stronger each day. She is pulling herself up on us, on her toys, in her crib. We found her in her crib on her knees, trying to pull herself. With a little assitance from us, she did make it into a standing position!

She looked so very proud of herself.

And so are we.

She's also pushing herself up from a laying down postion into a sitting position!!! The first time was on Aunt Betty and Uncle Ronnie's bed--3x in a row! And then did it again the following day, and today, the third day, she's already done it before 9am!

What an exciting time in our house!

First word and much, much more!

Abigail's first word is MILK! She has consistently signed the word milk while drinking from a bottle and even has asked for it when she was acting a bit fussy. The milk sign looks like squeezing udders.

She's also recognizing her name! It's so amazing to see her look toward you after saying, "Abigail." She also recognizes when the door opens in her room--she looks toward it and greets you with a grin (lights us up everytime).

She's got a tooth! (really this time) It's on the bottom, right, center. Drool and lots of gum rubbing have ensued, but really happy all the same.

She no longer minds (much) to have her face wiped clean. This is fantastic news! Whenever we wiped her face after it was covered with whatever it was she was eating, she would complain as if the world was coming to an end. But now, like a champ, we can, wipe, wipe, wipe! Which brings us to things she likes to do for herself. Wipe her tray clean and feed herself. She likes to take the spoon away from the feeder, or guide their hand into her mouth. So independent!

She just recently again started to look at the pictures of a book. She used to do this all the time as an infant, but then she decided chewing on books was better than looking or hearing a story and now she's back to sitting back and enjoy its words and pictures. She also likes to climb up onto the bookshelves and hold herself up--she's so strong!

She went to her first, 1st birthday party of a friend. It's such a joy to see her with other children--she reaches for them, smiles and laughs. Which is basically what she does a good portion of most days.

And it's hard to believe but, tomorrow she will be in our lives for 8 months!

She likes to move it move it

Top Three Things that get Abigail On the Move:

#3...Paper - She's drawn to magazines, newspapers, wrappers, et al. Perhaps she'll grow up to be a writer.

#2...Daphne's Toys - Particularly when they're currently being chewed. And she's the only one of us who can get Daphne to "give."
#1...Fink - The girl loves, loves, loves Fink the Cat. Loves to laugh at her. Loves to grab her fur and tail. Loves to scoot across the floor after her. Watch out Fink...she's gonna getcha.

3 years!

Life sure has changed from where we started.

With Abigail responding to her name now and pulling a cover off her head when playing the "Where is Abigail?" game, could life be any better? And still, the best is yet to come...

Life is Good

We feel bad that we haven't been writing as frequently or as lengthy as we used to do. However, we don't feel that bad because that means our girl is that much more on the go! And boy is she ever! She pulled herself over the saddle of her new door into the living room this morning--she's just that strong! She occasionally wears an eyepatch to help strengthen her eyes and the world has opened up to her even more. She tugs and pulls at Daphne (who seems to just like the attention) and laughs at the sight of Fink curled up on a pillow. She shakes her rattle and her body all day long, she squeals with delight over anything and everything.

And, we didn't think it possible but, love her even more than we did yesterday.

Life is good.

Much to be thankful for

We are so thankful this year for the new life Abigail has brought upon us.

She's scooting now--most days she will be in a sitting position, lean forward, manage to sweep her legs behind her, be on her belly and then...scoot!

We spent Thanksgiving in New Jersey surrounded by loved ones--who could ask for anything more?

Sound Spectacular

Yesterday we didn't mention Abigail's greatest self-discovery: she can click her tongue and make the most amazing sounds which make her giggle. But maybe even better is when she smacks her lips together. Now that sound is phenomenal. Too hard to choose which one she likes better.

Video of this Sound Spectacular is forth coming.

Yesterday we mentioned she got up at 4:30am. Well, she agreed with her parents that that was WAY too early and slept in this morning...6:45am. And then napped about 2 hours later. Thank you Snoozing Gods!

Hello World!!

Things are changing around here.

It's not just the apartment turning into a 2 bedroom (which is progressing quite well), not just the fact that Fink and Daphne are getting along (slightly) better--commiserating on the apartment being turned upside down with the renovation, and not just because Abigail's sleep pattern has changed (though that's a big one--she woke up at 4:30am today)!

But the biggest change does indeed have to do with Abigail and it's the fact that EVERY moment is a new discovery for her. Before this month, we were the ones who noticed the changes in her but now she notices things about herself. Like finding her belly button--an amazing discovery! Like noticing toys make sounds and different sounds if you bang it on the floor as opposed to just rattling it in the air. That she can move her body to the beat of a song. That bath time is an awesome time to explore, well, everything! For the past few weeks she didn't like being sprayed, where as a few weeks before that, she seemed to enjoy it. Well folks, tonight she again was of the thought that being sprayed is fantastic because she can drink the water coming at her and try to grab it. AwEsOmE! Oh and, she can grab the faucet and the sides of the tub and she doesn't just have to lean back like she did when she was a "baby," now she can sit up and even try to put her face into the water. Oh, the wonder!

So, it's no wonder her sleep has been off--there's too much to enjoy, too much to look forward to, too much to remember to simply snooze. She wants to be up, uP, UP!

Oh and check out the pictures of how cool her blow-up-roll-thingie is. (there's lots of new pictures up).

7 months!

Hard to believe but, Abigail is now a big 7th month old girl! She's rolling and pivoting around to show off her age. We bought paint for her room and went to the Botanic Gardens to further celebrate this new age.

She's been grabbing at everything lately so much so that when she sits up she stretches forward and onto the ground...a sure sign that crawling is on its way!

Putting up a Wall

Work has begun in our 1BR apartment to put up a wall and give Abigail her own room.

Furniture has been moved wherever else there's space, and we've been left essentially crammed into our bedroom. Thus far, everyone seems to be faring well. Abigail is apparently unbothered by the banging and loud sounds. Daphne is very excited by every possibility that the front door opening again and again might bring. And, Fink is just generally irked, complaining a little but mostly keeping to herself.

Amanda is doing a great job keeping everyone safe.

Whoa!

Guess who flipped herself over and then comfortably slept on her belly for part of the night last night?

And, whose tooth erupted yesterday as well?! (And not the front incisors that are usually the first to blossom. No! She's got an incisor on her left side popping out. We think she saw Daphne's tooth bursting out of her mouth and thought that was the way to go).

She is sitting like a champ now as well. What a strong girl we have.

We are in awe of how rapidly our little lady is growing!

Pictures are coming!

So many milestones

Our little lady is sitting up! We were propping her up and then the next day she decided she could lean forward and sit on her own. She's still wobbly, but getting stronger everyday.

We (Abigail and Amanda) were sick the last week and a half and stayed home to take care of each other. But now, we're out and about again, continuing to swim, visiting the Botanic Garden with Grandma Roxy, picking pumpkins at the Queens County Farm Museum Pumpkin Patch with Grandma Eve and Grandpa Ken, and back to singing and dancing in our Music Together class. Oh, and she's now added pears, peas and prunes to her "delicious" list. And now, not only loves taking a bath every night, she's taken to splashing the water.

Another glorious thing Abigail is doing now, is reach for us. All of us, including Daphne. It's her version of a hug. When she is truly pleased and feeling particularly lovey and cuddly, she reaches her hand to touch our face--and it is pure joy to experience.

Tomorrow, our girl will be 6 months. Or as Jonathan has said, "we've known her a half a year now." Time is flying, and we're enjoying every second.

Oh, and, Daphne won Best in Show at the Prospect Place Senior Center dog fashion show. She celebrated by eating the frisbee she got for 1st prize. Abigail was there to cheer her on.

Looking Proud

If you look at the pictures, you'll see our girl has been doing a lot of eating. We're trying to get into a well defined schedule and with that, it helps if Abigail is full. And well rested...that's more of an issue lately.

It seems she's so excited about the new found world that's opened up to her that she doesn't want to nap anymore. Or maybe it'll be for 45 minutes or sometimes, (gasp!), only 20 minutes. Makes for some long days, but, thankfully, still a well rested night!

She can't wait to get back into the pool but unfortunately there have been no classes last week or this one. 'till next week then!

Abigail has been rolling, rolling, rolling and the best part is, she looks proud of herself when she does it. She loves standing, with assistance from us of course, but she looks so pleased with herself. We love that our girl has a great self-esteem!

We were sad to see that our wedding tree in Prospect Park split during the tornado two weeks back. There's still a good portion of the tree still standing and we're hopeful the whole tree doesn't have to come down. Cross your fingers!

This weekend is the Friends of Hudson River Park's Pet Parade! Guess which proud dog will be in it?! Maybe we'll see you there!

2028 Olympics, here we come!
Really, need we say more?

Birthday girls

Happy 5 months Abigail! Could it be the day she turns five months is the night she flips herself over in her crib?! Indeed!

Happy birthday Grandma! Thanks for giving us all a lot of love--and for giving Abigail a bath today! She didn't love it but she sure does smell sweet.

There's lots more pictures to see too!

Peace

Today we think of David Weiss and all those we lost 9 years ago. Let us all come together in peace.

Our blossoming girl

Abigail for several weeks has been making incredible, adorable fish faces and now--she is sucking in her bottom lip in the most darling way--still haven't been able to capture it on film (working on it!)

Last weekend, we went to the zoo and saw lots of animals but it was the chickens that actually caught her eye (or was it the fact that Papa was holding her and making chicken sounds that she noticed them at all--who cares, she had a great time and so did we!)

On Mama's birthday, she bought her the most beautiful flowers! We celebrated with friends and family at...Bubby's! And, then we took a walk along the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park. It was a very memorable birthday in part because Amanda now knows the true meaning of birthday and in part because she got to spend it with people she loves dearly.

She's grabbing both feet now!! And she's even grabbing her own pulkes (thighs)...there's a lot to grab and more every day!

We visited the Botanic Garden this week. They were watering their grounds and the sprinklers hit their pathway--it was sort of unavoidable. I tried serpentine maneuvers so that Abigail wouldn't get wet and yet, it was bound to happen--she let out a yelp but took it in stride as I patted her dry she giggled with delight.

A tree has been planted in Abigail's name, in Israel, thanks Grandma and Grandpa!

Happy girl, happy parents

We love how Abigail wakes up in the morning--talking to herself. What do you think she's saying? "I wonder what adventures I'm going on today, hey...there's my hand!" Or, "Will I be able to eat that orange or green stuff again today?" (Sweet potatoes and avocados have been added to her solid food menu!)

Last weekend we hung out with lots of older kids (the Tot Lot with Hayley and Charlotte and then the next day trying on costumes with Beatrix and Millie). We discovered too that Abigail thinks puppets are hysterical (especially if they're shiny, have big eyes and a mouth). A fish puppet spoke to her and she laughed and laughed. We bought one for her own this week and while she doesn't think it's as funny she's still mesmerized by it.

We went to the MoMA yesterday with Wanda and baby Aaron. They ate through much of the trip, but still had a great time discovering the works of Matisse and Picasso.

We're off to our fourth sign class today! Abigail hasn't quite picked up any of the signs (in fact last week was the first one she didn't eat or sleep through most of the 45 minutes), but Mama has and can't wait to show them to her when she's ready.

We are more amazed than ever of our girl. Whether she's laughing, wiggling, crying or reaching for our hands we are simply in awe that she is our daughter. Our daughter! It's no longer, "I can't believe she's here" but more, "how did we ever live without her?"

Abigail sure is growing up

First it's days, then it's weeks and then it become months--how we gauge how old our Abigail is. (Though we have thought she'll be a year old in just 8 short months!) Then we started gauging Abigail's growth by milestones--she found her hands, she's picking her head up while on her tummy, she's laughing...and now we're noticing the smaller, delicate, heartwarming things that tell us she's beautifully growing.

Like when Amanda kisses her good-night, Abigail rubs her belly and smiles with approval (and then, hopefully will drift off to sleep easily), or when Jonathan couldn't feed her fast enough when she was taking her first bites of rice cereal and now BANANAS! Abigail is turning into quite the person.

And...

She's found her foot (just the left one for now)!

We took a trip to the Brooklyn Museum and Abigail discovered she likes looking at African masks and headdresses. She cooed as she sat in her Papa's arms, transfixed. She also seemed pleased with a lot of Andy Warhol's paintings. She'll be an art historian, just like her Papa!

Solid food!!

That's right--Abigail has tried and LOVED eating rice cereal! At first, she wasn't so sure about it but then, YUM, mouth open ready to eat. So much so that when she wasn"t eating--she cried for more! She finished the 2 tablespoons in no time at all and even had room for some of mama's milk. Next stop--beef stew! There is video, click on First taste! located on the right.

Happy 4 months Abigail!

Back from Vermont

Well, we're back from a week in Craftsbury, Vermont. We had a lovely time with all that glorious space, green mountains, and fresh air. The farmhouse was so different from when we went up in December — last time Daphne trudged through snow, this time through tall grass. Hard to believe that on our last trip Abigail was still inside Amanda's belly, and we hadn't yet met her.

At the Cabot Creamery, Abigail scoffed when she heard milk comes from cows. She cried out (wailed, actually), apparently disturbed at the spreading of such vicious lies — clearly, milk comes from mommies, not cows! Needless to say we did not finish the tour.

She did much better when we did the Trapp Family Lodge history tour. (The Sound of Music family) Though we arrived an hour and ten minutes early to take the tour (we thought the tour started at 10, not 11), Abigail slept through most of it. We were thrilled when Rosemarie, one of the von Trapp children–now in her 80's–told us she looked like a happy child. To hear that from one of the 'hills are alive' children, was very gratifying.

And now we're back. Abigail has done a lot of growing in our time away from Brooklyn. She can pick her head up while on her belly, she's enjoyed an infant massage and she's laughing more each day. Life is pretty swell.

Check out the new photos by clicking on the albums to the right (there are 2 new ones!). Enjoy!

Laughter!

Abigail is enjoying life--all 15 weeks of it! Fifteen weeks old--can you believe it?! She has been known to let out a laugh or two, and is constantly smiling! Jonathan gets her to grin by saying, "who has a stinky tooshie?" to her, and Abigail beams when Amanda does Eskimo kisses with her. Her smiles are rays of sunshine that light our world.

Abigail is also making sounds and producing lots of bubbles and drool (so much so that sometimes she needs to wear a bib!).

She still loves to bounce in her chair and now she likes to spin her wooden toys while she bumps up and down (which she can sometimes do on her own using her own momentum, and not just have someone else rock her).

We went to Uncle Jason and Aunt Vivian's party, met up with other babies in the park, and while we stroll--Abigail is now in the stroller seat (no longer her carseat resting on the top of the stroller)--she's such a big girl now!

Click here to see our pictures!

Hope everyone is having a great summer! Next week we head up for some peace and quiet in Vermont!

The fourth trimester is done

Three months. How did that happen? In one of the books we read, it said to think about the first three months of life as the fourth, and final trimester of fetal development. Well, now it's done, and Abigail welcomes the world again with new engagement.

Our lady is now sleeping basically through the night--the big change is she is slumbering unswaddled. That's a big deal. One night she was squirming too much in her swaddle and we decided to give it shot; the shot being sleeping, simply, in her footsie pjs and that's it. She seemed to love the idea. She wiggled her legs up and down, she flapped her arms, she cooed to herself and then...she fell asleep! All on her own. The first night she woke up once in the night but then the second night, she slept for a nice long stretch, woke up after that long stretch to eat and then...a nice long nap on her papa and THEN she even slept more in her crib. That's our girl!

So, she's a good sleeper at night and early mornings. However, sleeping in the carseat, in a car (as opposed to when she's in the carseat strolling in her City Mini), is another story. She wails in cars, except when she doesn't, which has happened too. Just when we think we know her likes and dislikes, she changes them. Just when we think we have a pattern in anything she does, she switches it on us. This constant fluctuation reminds us we just need to live moment to moment with her and enjoy her for who she is right at that very second. And we certainly are revelling in her.

She met lots of her cousins, aunts and uncles in Long Island; along with visiting her Grandma Roxy in NJ this past weekend. Though we have no photographic proof of any of this encounters, we do have other pictures. Enjoy!

Fourth of July Weekend!

This weekend we braved the ocean, partied at two parties and most impressively Abigail is now facing out in her Baby Bjorn carrier--her world has opened up dramatically. She all of a sudden was craning her neck to see out of her carrier past her Mom's shoulders, so we turned her around and her eyes got wide taking it all in. When we passed under trees, she began to make sounds of discontentment, but as soon as we cleared the leaves and it wasn't dark anymore, she was quiet, and her eyes grew round again with wonder.

Abigail is still sleeping like a champ. She's sleeping so well that we delayed our departure for Manhattan Beach by one hour because she slept in! We got our Zipcar at 7am thinking she'd be up around 5:30am, but since she woke up around 7:30am (all smiles too!), we didn't leave 'til 8. Yes, we like to get to the beach early, when it's not obscenely hot or atrociously crowded and, we can feel a great sense of accomplishment for having gotten out of the door so early and back while it's still morning. We had a good time at the beach. Although the water was a little cold to Abigail's liking. Check her out in her bathing suit (thanks Suzy for it) and her patriotic outfit here!

She's had a lot of practice building up her neck muscles, looking like a movie star, wearing "wigs" and she loves to see herself in the mirror. She doesn't know it's herself yet, but she sure does like looking at that baby! There's even more photos of her doing all these exciting things here. Daphne and Fink make an appearance too! (Three weeks worth of pictures!)

Tomorrow she'll be 12 weeks old--how did that happen?!

Monday, June 28, 2010

10 weeks and tomorrow will make 11

Abigail has a very busy social calender, from her Papa's Father's Day celebration last weekend then to this past weekend when she met the man who married her parents, Mr. Kevin Bartlett, to Aaron's bris (congratulations Wanda and Adam!), she is out and about.

She's definitely teething and not loving it no matter how much we tell her teeth will be a good thing. She's drooling, eating her hand, rubbing her eyes and ears...all signs that teeth are a'coming. It probably won't be until a few months from now, but there's something happening in there.

Pictures are coming but with our girl staying awake more and talking more, we have less time to post things. She's maturing so fast!

Happy last day to all the NYC public school teachers!

Two months and then some

It's amazing how Abigail is growing. She is, after all, a big 2 months.

She's still sleeping like a champ at night and stays up longer in the day to explore her new world. She celebrated her grandmother's birthday, she saw her Uncle Jason and Aunt Vivian's new apartment, she loves to talk to us while on her changing table (she's got a lot to say and laugh about), popping up and down on her bouncy chair is a gleeful pass-time, we strolled the Botanic Garden with friends, she has lots of tummy time where she picks her head up tall, and, is deeply loved by whomever she is with, particularly her proud parents.

And she's a cutie, but don't take our word for it.

Smiling!

We are ecstatic to announce that Abigail is smiling, even on the day she received 4 vaccination shots!

Here are some other important digits in her world:

10 lbs, 2 oz!

22 inches long!

At least 7 hours of consistent sleep each night (maybe 6, maybe 8 sometimes)!

Saw 2 walruses at the aquarium (okay, her parents saw them, she slept through that visit)!

20 pictures in her latest album

7th Week

We're trying to decide if things are getting easier, like lots of parents have told us should be happening around this week.

Now, she is smiling more and even sleeping more, but for some reason we're not any less tired.

There are moments of panic that she's not eating enough, she's sleeping too much (could she be sick?!), she cries for longer periods of time, she's fussy about eating from a bottle and when she's up she demands attention.

So, while it's not getting easier in our eyes, she is growing and forming into quite a person. And those little moments where she smiles and dare we say it, laughs, are heart-warming and -melting all at once. Our little bundle has us in a bundle of emotions.

Easier, no. Worth it, yes.

Enjoy some pics.

8 Hours

That's right. Abigail gave both of us a birthday present last night: 8 hours of sleep. She slept conitnously, we had moments of panic, "is she breathing?!" When we realized she was fine, we were astonished, and went back to sleep. She slept for most of the day too.

We'll see how tonight goes.

Meeting up with lots of people

Abigail is six weeks old! We celebrated by meeting up with some people from Packer and then seven other babies and their mommies in the park–she was the youngest one there!

We've had an exciting week--her great grandmother's 90th birthday party where she met some family members she never met before (and said "hello" to others she had hung out with before), we saw her aunt Alyssa at the Flea, we went to the Brooklyn Museum with all of her grandparents and good friend Jackie, she was visited by good friends Natalie and Kathy and she enjoyed time snuggling up in a handmade blanket made by our Lady of Laughter, Andrea. A good week all around. Check out some of these documented events.

And, she's even slept a night in her big crib in the living room, sleeping for 5 hours straight, probably lulled to sleep by Daphne's snoring.

5th Week of Life

Some pictures of the big shot Five Week Old! You'll see she's been singing, dancing and pretending to be a lil' monkey:

Now if you've checked out the pictures you saw Abigail also loves to sleep. Except when she refuses to because she's either crying or staring at things. Her parents prefer the latter. It's wonderful to have her gaze at us and awful when she's crying, okay wailing, instead. Though we have gotten some helpful hints from the book, The Happiest Baby on the Block, it's still heartbreaking, and frustrating, to hear and see our crying child.

However she did sleep for SIX HOURS STRAIGHT three nights ago, only to have the next few nights be one where she was up every few hours (or every hour). So she gave us a little sneak peek and we enjoyed it thoroughly, anxiously awaiting another night of such felicity.

And if you ask Abigail what she prefers--taking a bath or taking a shower--she would most definitely tell you shower! Thought we could celebrate her 5th week with a nice, warm bath--wrong! She took a shower a week back with such a look of contentment as opposed to today's woeful bath. Well, it was the quickest bath in the world and we've now learned our lesson--in order for our babe to stay sweet smelling--a shower it is!

It's been one wild ride!

One month! (and much thanks)

Abigail is now one month old! Plus she's now a substantial 8 and 1/2 pounds. We're very impressed:

We celebrated by taking a walk and then coming home to take a nap. Such bliss.

We also wanted to thank the women who helped Abigail come into this world safely. Their knowledge, strength and wit made all the difference a month ago:

We are forever grateful to CBS Midwifery; Barbara Sellers who delivered Abigail and Elizabeth Boyce who didn't deliver but supported us throughout the pregnancy. These two women are phenomenal midwives.

We also could not have made it through the labor and delivery so beautifully without the guidance of Sarah Moore, our doula. She is invaluable to us--we still look to her when we are bit frazzled by this whole parenting thing.

Much thanks too to you for checking in on us and our blog. We have such loving and caring friends and family surrounding us--we cherish you!

Here are our latest pictures!

A Big Week for Abigail

Abigail turned 3-weeks-old this past Tuesday. Amanda and Abigail celebrated throughout the week. Unfortunately, the Friends of Hudson River Park Gala on Thursday kept Jonathan pretty busy. The ladies, including Daphne, went outside for several walks all together this week, and Jonathan was even able to join them for a late night (that's 8:30 for us these days) ice cream run. And, at one point during the week, Abigail's Grandpa Ken took her for a long stroll around Prospect Park.

On a more official front, Abigail's papers all came this week. Now she has a birth certificate and a social security card. Without much in the way of pockets, though, we'll likely hold on to them for her for a while. But it's nice to know that now Abigail can get a job if she wants to start earning her own money.

Two weeks

It was two weeks ago that we became parents. And through the sleepless nights, the reading of What to Expect the First Year at 3am (which we do not recommend at that hour) and the lovely chirping sounds she makes at any hour of the day--we're having a great time.

Hope you enjoy the latest pictures of our "little package."

You'll also see a few pictures of Daphne, who just turned two yesterday! Happy birthday puppy dog!

It's a girl!!!

Yesterday morning, April 13th at 8:15am, we joyfully welcomed our beautiful baby daughter, Abigail Rose Ettinger, to this world weighing 6 pounds 6 ounces, measuring 19 1/4 inches, and with a full head of ash-blonde hair. We're just in awe of her.

We got home from the hospital this afternoon, after visits from one aunt, one uncle and all the grandparents. Baby and Mom are doing great, albeit tired.

Click here to view pictures from Abigail Rose's 1st 2 days.

Rollo's comin' any day now

Our baby is coming soon. 39 weeks pregnant and due April 15th. Stay tuned for some exciting news!

Belly rumble

There has been some serious movement in the belly. Rollo loves to move early in the morning or late at night. We're positive we're going to see a foot or hand popping out at any moment. Just two and half more months left!
